Kofi Essel, MD, MPH, FAAP is the inaugural Food as Medicine Director at Elevance Health. He leads innovative strategies to address diet-related chronic diseases and social risks through novel food interventions.
A board-certified community pediatrician at Children’s National Hospital and Clinical Associate Professor at George Washington University (GWU), Dr. Essel has focused his career on health disparities, public health training, and community engagement. He previously directed the GWU Culinary Medicine Program and is nationally recognized for his work addressing food insecurity and nutrition-related disease.
An award-winning author and speaker, Dr. Essel is widely published and regularly featured in media. He holds leadership roles with the National Academies, Food Research and Action Center (FRAC), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the Partnership for a Healthier America. He earned his B.S. from Emory and M.D./M.P.H. from GWU.
